When Armandine, a young reporter for a small mountain town newspaper, discovers the lost edition of a rare book, she unearths the truth about a Prohibition-era manhunt undertaken by author and adventurer Horace Kephart. He and his friend, a Cherokee war hero known by the nickname Catch, are recruited by a strange US Marshal known only as The Snake Stick Man to track down notorious moonshiner Buck Ruff. But instead of tracking a human criminal, the men discover they are on the trail of an ancient Evil, the Wolf Man of Appalachia, and that they, the hunters, have become the hunted.
Inspired by Horace Kephart’s true account of prohibition-era murder, moonshine, and mountain mayhem, MOONSHINELAND is the story of two friends’ journey into the Appalachian wilderness, their battles with supernatural cryptids, murderous lumberjacks, and perhaps even the Devil himself.
Moonshineland masterfully navigates the realms of rollicking Western adventure, gothic horror, and historical folklore. It was great fun! -- Dr. David Waldron, Federation University
There is way more to this weird historical detail than what I thought, like finding out what’s important when it’s almost too late. This is a great book with magic demons, and yes, the devil makes an appearance. (It's a) a super awesome read. -- Janalyn Prude, Goodreads
A terrifying and gripping novel. I felt like I was sitting around a crackling campfire listening to an old Appalachian mountain tale - I got hair-raising chills when the man with the serpent staff joined the hunt! The book was superbly written and engaging from start to finish. -- Amazon customer
A refreshing mythologic and colloquially authentic Appalachian tale of mystery, murder, mayhem and moonshine. Saddle up, grab a pint, and prepare for a tightly wound, and delightfully structured ensemble narrative — a uniquely specific prohibition era cast chok’ full of wildly memorable characters including Catch, The Snake Stick Man, and Buck Ruf to name just a few. This atmospheric read will leave you emphatically satisfied, and lookin’ to score more prose from author Ryan Hines. MOONSHINELAND!
What a phenom series! Reminds me of an old-fashioned ghost/mountain story told around a campfire. I listened to the first and am locked in. It’s really well-written and the cast is incredible. Can’t wait to see what happens!
Love the sound production and the thriller mystery vibe of this story. I’m not from there or have any roots but Appalachian mythology is so intriguing to me.
